At MotivatePT’s, Lunch and Learn Seminar, we learned everything you need to know about breakfast. Breakfast seems trivial, but many of us struggle to find the time or motivation to make a meal so early in the day. Working in an office all day can be detrimental to your health and it’s important to take care of yourself. Eating a substantial breakfast is the first step towards a healthier lifestyle.


Our MotivatePT nutritionist, Severine Menem, talked to a room of young professionals who were very eager to learn how to incorporate a healthy breakfast into their busy schedule. Below are some of the top questions that were addressed.

When should I eat breakfast?

There is no specific time to eat breakfast, it all depends on the individual. A recommended time to eat breakfast is within an hour of waking up, but if you are still full from your meal the night before, you should wait. The only time you should be eating is when you are hungry, but many individuals do not apply this rule because there are too many triggers throughout the day. Breakfast is important to help refuel your body after a night of fasting, which makes it a great way to start the work day.

What is a healthy breakfast?

A healthy breakfast can involve a variety of different foods but it is important to incorporate three main food groups: healthy fats, carbohydrates and protein. All of these food groups enhance your productivity throughout the day because of their energy levels. An example of the optimal breakfast would be egg whites as protein, avocado as healthy fats, and oatmeal on the side for carbohydrates. Many people are incredibly busy in the morning and lack time to make this kind of breakfast, however, there are numerous options. As well as having a healthy breakfast, it’s important to keep hydrated. Our nutritionist, Severinne, recommends having a glass of warm water with lemon every morning. This drink has many benefits including; flushing out toxins and its high vitamin C content; which improves the skin elasticity and immune system.

How do I keep breakfast exciting?

Too often people just eat to refuel, which does not lead to a healthy relationship towards food. You need to enjoy what you are eating and keep things interesting. You should eat with purpose rather than to refuel. Humans are creatures of habit and we tend to get stuck into the rhythm of eating the same thing over and over again. It’s important to constantly switch things up to keep it exciting. Just like working out, you get bored of doing the same exercises everyday. When that happens, you don’t want to workout anymore. Some ways to keep your breakfast exciting is to find food that you like and make different modifications of that type of food. That way you don’t get bored of your favourite food and you look forward to your meals.

Every meal is important, but breakfast sets your day off on the right track. When you have a good, healthy breakfast you are more inclined to finish the day on a healthier note. Breakfast gives you the energy to conquer your work day!
